Yogi Bear really was smarter than the average bear. In his never-ending quest for a pic-a-nic basket, he inspired us all to get out and enjoy a lunch al fresco. Living in this part of California lends itself to some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Here are our favorite Sunnyvale parks to lay out a blanket and enjoy an old-fashioned picnic.
Baylands Park has a little bit for everyone. If you just want to set out a blanket in the middle of a field with a beautiful view of the bay, this is the perfect place. You can also go for a jaunt along the park’s long walking paths. There are plenty of shady areas for hot days and plenty of space for games like Frisbee or football. It is also a great place to herons and other marshland wildlife.
This little park is adjacent to Braly Elementary School and is a great place to take kids. The playground is amazing. State of the art play structures abound, including a unique king-of-the-hill type mountain with a slide. For your picnic, there are plenty of tables available beneath shady trees, or you can pitch a blanket right out in the field. On warmer days, there is a water feature to keep cool: a large concrete frog fountain that makes a nice splash pad. For sporty types, there is a very large sand area for volleyball or other games.
The big draw here is the dog park! You can have your picnic and share it with your favorite furry friend. Aside from the awesome Tiki themed playground, there are tennis courts, large picnic areas, and lots of, you guessed it: las palmas! For the pooch in your life, the dog park offers an enclosed place to run free and socialize with other pups. And there are even separate enclosed spaces for large and small dogs, so you don’t have to worry about the smaller dogs getting picked on.
